Tory MPs move to double penalty for masked rioters
OTTAWA — Conservative MPs used their majority on a House of Commons committee Thursday to double the maximum penalty for wearing a mask or disguise during a riot to 10 years behind bars.
A Conservative private member’s bill originally proposed creating Criminal Code offences with maximum penalties of five years in prison but Tory MPs amended the proposed legislation despite objections from the NDP.
Tory MP Blake Richards introduced the Concealment of Identity Act in April, but debate on legislation began last week. Government support usually ensures a bill’s passage.
