The owner of an Ohio restaurant where President Obama ate breakfast Friday morning during his campaign bus tour died a few hours later.
Josephine “Ann” Harris, 70, the owner of Ann’s Place in Akron, Ohio, died of an apparent heart attack after being rushed to a hospital complaining of fatigue and a tingling feeling, according to the Akron Beacon Journal.
The paper reports that Harris was an Obama supporter and seemed “ecstatic” about his visit shortly after the motorcade left.
According to the Beacon Journal, Obama gave Harris a hug while he was there.
President Obama called Harris’s family to offer his condolences after he heard the news.
“The president expressed his sorrow and his condolences about this very sad event,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said. “He was honored to meet her and passed on his feelings that the whole family is in his thoughts and prayers.”
The White House pool reports from the breakfast indicate Obama interacted with several people at the restaurant and ate with three local tire industry workers.
Obama arrived at the restaurant at about 8 a.m., according to a pool report. He ordered two eggs, bacon and wheat toast, and accepted grits when offered.
Harris died at 11:18 a.m., according to the newspaper.
