A political analyst tells Press TV that getting information out of Mali has been made very difficult because the French army has kept the media out and there is a media blackout there as well as in the American media.

The comments came after Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said 74,000 Malians who have taken refuge in the desert of Mauritania need urgent help and humanitarian assistance. The medical aid agency, which is also known as Medecins Sans Frontieres, said on Friday that the condition of Malian refugees in the Mbera camp was deplorable and that the “humanitarian assistance is insufficient.”

Hollywood’s attempt to re-write history has been condemned by New Zealand’s Parliament.

MPs have today voted unanimously to support a motion from New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters that condemned the way New Zealand is portrayed in Oscar-winning film Argo.

The film showed New Zealand diplomats turning away a group of Americans trying to escape from Tehran during the Iranian revolution in 1979.

In reality, a New Zealander drove the Americans to the airport in Tehran so they could fly to Switzerland.

Peters called it a “grave misrepresentation” of the courageous and commendable role of New Zealand diplomats.

“I move that this house acknowledge with gratitude the efforts of former New Zealand diplomats Chris Beeby and Richard Sewell,” Peters said.

“Our courageous New Zealand diplomats’ inspirational actions were of significant help to the American hostages and deserve the historic and factual record to be corrected.”

Director Ben Affleck defended his portrayal of Kiwis in the film saying it was not an easy decision to make.

“You try to honour the truth of the essence, the sort of basic truth of the story you’re telling,” he told Reel Life with Jane.

Argo won the best film Oscar at last month’s Academy Awards.

Reports: Iran mulls suing Hollywood over ‘Argo’

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iranian media say authorities are planning to sue Hollywood over the Oscar-winning “Argo” because of the movie’s allegedly “unrealistic portrayal” of the country.

Several news outlets, including the pro-reform Shargh daily, said on Tuesday that French lawyer Isabelle Coutant-Peyre is in Iran for talks with officials over how and where to file the lawsuit. Coutant-Peyre is also the lawyer for notorious Venezuelan-born terrorist Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, known as Carlos the Jackal.

The decision on the lawsuit came after a group of Iranian cultural officials and movie critics screened the film in a closed audience in a Tehran theater late Monday.

Iranian officials in February dismissed “Argo” as pro-CIA, anti-Iran propaganda.

The movie is based on the escape of six American hostages from the besieged U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1979.

Al-Jazeera buys Current TV from Al Gore

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Al-Jazeera, the Pan-Arab news channel that struggled to win space on American cable television, has acquired Current TV, boosting its reach nearly ninefold to about 40 million homes. With a focus on U.S. news, it plans to rebrand the left-leaning news network that cofounder Al Gore couldn’t make relevant.

The former vice president confirmed the sale Wednesday, saying in a statement that Al-Jazeera shares Current TV’s mission “to give voice to those who are not typically heard; to speak truth to power; to provide independent and diverse points of view; and to tell the stories that no one else is telling.”

The acquisition lifts Al-Jazeera’s reach beyond a few large U.S. metropolitan areas including New York and Washington, where about 4.7 million homes can now watch Al-Jazeera English.

Al-Jazeera, owned by the government of Qatar, plans to gradually transform Current into a new channel called Al-Jazeera America by adding five to 10 new U.S. bureaus beyond the five it has now and hiring more journalists.

However, Al Jazeera’s attempt to gain more viewership in the US suffered an early setback after Time Warner Cable said it would stop carrying Current TV following the ownership change.

Time Warner, the second biggest cable company in the US, said it had already been looking to remove channels with low ratings, and this acquisition gave it the ability to cancel its contract.

Perception, Act Like a Slave, Be Treated Like a Slave

We, as a species, like to label things. We seem to like to be able to slap a label on something so that when we talk about things we have an idea about what’s being talked about. This works well for physical things like plants, animals or minerals, but it can be a bit lacking when talking about not so physical things like political philosophies. People like to label someone like me, someone who doesn’t fit into any of their prefabricated political party holes, so to speak, as a libertarian, an minarchist, a constitutionalist, or some other label. I like to think of myself as an individualist as opposed to a collectivist. I also like to think of myself as an abolitionist, though the vast majority of Americans would believe that such a label is unnecessary as slavery was ended by Abraham Lincoln back in 1865 at the end of the War of Northern Aggression. I would say that no one is as enslaved as the person who believes he is free when he is not. Slavery has just become more subtle and the masters have changed. Read more
